Waste management and housing issues have become significant challenges in Rupandehi district, particularly for underprivileged communities grappling with inadequate living conditions. The growing waste problem, especially along the riversides of Danda River, Rohini River, Tinau River, and Danav River, is an urgent concern that demands immediate attention.
To address these interconnected challenges, Housing and Tenants Organization Nepal (HTON) organized the program titled “Waste Management: Challenges and Opportunities.” The initiative aimed to support local governments in creating long-term, sustainable waste management systems while simultaneously improving housing conditions for vulnerable populations.
HTON focused its efforts on three municipalities in Rupandehi—Siddharthanagar Municipality, Rohini Rural Municipality, and Omsatiya Rural Municipality. The program explored solutions to waste management, housing quality, and socio-economic challenges faced by underprivileged communities. Plans included capacity-building for local communities, training on modern waste management technologies, technical support for scientific waste practices, and improving housing conditions in low-income areas.
HTON is committed to advocating for improved housing rights, safe living environments, and essential services for underprivileged communities. By fostering collaboration between local governments, communities, and experts, we aim to turn these challenges into opportunities for sustainable development and enhanced quality of life for all. During the event, local leaders, experts, and professionals gathered to discuss modern waste management technologies and best practices for improving living standards in diverse communities.
We express our sincere gratitude to all participants who contributed to the success of the event, including the Honorable Minister for Urban Development and Water Supply of Lumbini Province, Mr. Saroj Thapa, members of the Provincial Assembly, local elected representatives, social and political leaders, government officials, experts, and our key collaborators—Siddharthanagar Municipality, Rohini Rural Municipality, and the Lumbini Eye Institute and Research Center Rupandehi Branch.
The program, which concluded on December 10, 2025, was attended by more than 250 participants. During the event, Dr. Dhundi Raj Pathak, a renowned Solid Waste Management Specialist, shared his expertise. His presentation provided a comprehensive overview of best practices in solid waste management, offering invaluable knowledge and practical solutions to all attendees.
Creating a clean, green, and sustainable environment, while improving housing conditions for the underprivileged, is not only our duty but also our commitment to a brighter future. Waste management and housing are shared responsibilities, and it is time for collective action toward a better tomorrow.
